This picture is comprised of 15 minute subs, totaling 4.5hours of exposure. Taken last night up until about 2am when the moon took over and washed out the sky.

Located in the constellation Sagittarius, the Trifid nebula is a beautiful combination of reflection nebula (blue) and emission nebula (red).

    Thanks for looking.

Why do we pay NASA millions again?

It's an amazing pic, what zoom equivalent is the glass, and how do you find the nebulas?

I don't know if this is considered taboo in astrophotography, but a quick little PP might help make it more appealing to the laymen.

Nice shot. I find the trifid can always use a 15-30% saturation boost to really make it come alive.

As for the not black blacks, when we post on a forum such as this you guys don't like the brownish sky, but if we adjust it to a nice rich black the guys on the astro forums don't like that we clipped some shadows.

    hehe How do you win?

When I print I usually clip it to a nice black, adjust the saturation and brightness to my liking and make a nice wall hanger:)

I'll do trifid soon, but right now it gets dark enough to shoot at about 22:00.

I'd like to give a wide field of the virgo cluster a try, but been very cloudy/busy.

I'm breaking ground on my observatory possibly this week so when its done I'll have much more time in shooting than setting up.

To answer the black point...yes, if you clip it too much to try to make it look "Pleasing", you end up losing data.

The other thing is, a great deal of space, especially when photographing towards our galactic centre, is not empty and is certainly not black.

Hours of exposure, with the right darks subtraction, reveals more and more in the depths and distance, where otherwise in a wider field of view, looks black.

I have circled the Trifid in Rob Gendler's widefield of our Milky Way galactic centre. You will see that space is chocka block full of all kinds of light and colour.
