Lutz Comments On Brand's Future, or Lack Thereof

”My personal favorite would be to see Saturn survive and prosper,” GM’s vice chairman told Automotive News. “But frankly, the reality is that that is probably not going to be the outcome.”

“That really seals our fate,” said Lasser, owner of Saturn of Denville, Saturn of Mount Olive and Saturn of Livingston. “I think they knew this fact months ago, and they never shared it with us.”

“We spent a huge bundle of money in giving Saturn an absolutely no-excuses product lineup, top to bottom. They had a better and fresher lineup than any GM division, and the sales just never materialized…

Lutz doesn’t fault dealers: “We have some very excellent Saturn dealers who’ve made a commitment to the brand.”

Lutz said he isn’t sure why Saturn has not done better.

“The fact is,” he said, “we don’t have the time or the resources to take 10 years to figure it out and possibly turn it around.”

Sad news for Saturn. Will they just slowly let the brand die off or will this be a huge money losing thing like the death of Oldsmobile?

That's a bummer. More Saturn, less Buick.

Their "no haggle" policy really fucked them up. At least it did with me. I can attest to this from personal experience when I tried to buy a new Sky Redline. They would not come off of the price at all. They had been out for over a year at this point. There was a Pontiac/Buick dealership directly across the street. I could have gone and haggled over a GXP Solstice, which is the same exact car. Other customers could have done the same with an Outlook vs Enclave/Acadia, Vue vs Envoy (i think? maybe not), or down to the Chevy dealership with an Aura vs Malibu, or even to the Toyota dealership with a Vibe vs Matrix. I'm not going to pay more for a car just so I don't have to haggle.

Scion is kicking ass. They'll laugh if you want to haggle. They might haggle for aftermarket rice to add to your econobox, but not on the econobox itself.

Saturn as a brand is a useless appendage to GM-I agree. However, its brand philosophy and hell, some [most???] of its line up deserve to soldier on as Chevies.
The Astra is probably 10x the car the current the Cobalt is, and should be the Cruze Sport
The Vue is a true Rav4 competitor, the Equinox is temptingly cheap but not what it promises to be.
The Sky is a design gem, killing off that body would be retarded. Make a Chevy Sky, not a Solstice

I don't even know why I brought the Vibe up. Not even a Saturn, lol.

What GM did to Saturn was price the entire range out of the hands of traditional Saturn buyers and above what people who typically weren't Saturn buyers would pay for the brand.

Exactly right, and kind of what I was trying to display, as far as prices of similar GM models.

It's a name GM sticks on cars. It will disappear like Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Eagle and others before them did.

The US new vehicle market is not big enough to support all these niche American brands. Many of them are going to evaporate before it's all over. Maybe even an entire American automaker like GM or Chrysler.

It's been beaten to death, but the piss poor thing about all of this is that none of GM's brands even have a clear identity, except for maybe Cadillac.

as in i think that they may have to go ahead and file chapter 11, which in my opinion would be a good thing!...but i don't think they will disappear completely.

Haggling doesn't get you much anyway, unless you happen to live in an area with a competing dealership and/or you're buying a car with visible damage. If you really want a discount, buy with a cashier's check -- they'll write off $1000 or more just because they'll get their money all at once.
