I'm contemplating on joing local MMA gym to strenghten my body and pick-up a new hobby while doing so.... but here is the thing... I have sciatic nerve problem... It often aches and makes me stop doing physical activites.. although i'm fine now, i really want to join this sport... do you guys think its detrimental to my body if i commit?

    inputs are welcome :)

Not smart. The basis of leg kicks is to drill the sciatic nerve of the opponent (refer to Hughes GSP II). If you have sciatica or whatever issues it is it can be a terrible idea. But I am no doctor.

I highly suggest consulting with yoru physician before you join a gym and dont listen to what any one at a gym says cause they arent a doctor.

After watching my dad's body deteriorate at a young age form working iron I learned one thing, NEVER fuck around with back pain, it can ruin your life.

Best of luck with whatever you chose. I would suggest just boxing.

    :ugh:

simply supporting your post by posting the picture of someone who is now going to suffer from their lower back injuries worsened by MMA.

but feel free if you want to be a complete fuck stick about it....

I think its a good thing especially jui jitsu as the core strength increase tends to help lower back issues no end.

tempting to particapate in an activity that puts punishment on your back when you have back problems, i find that interesting.

I've had back problems since I was 15, hockey injury. MMA training has been nothing but good for my back. In my particular situation, building up the muscles in my back helped ease tension on the injured soft tissue. The specific movements necessary in bjj and striking arts tend to build core strength, which helps a lot.

I got the most benefit from a piece of equipment at my old gym that we called "the chair"...I'll try to find a picture, but its basically a chair mounted on a pole at a 45 degree angle, that spins 360 degrees on its own axis. You use your core muscles to manipulate its rotation...takes a minute to get the hang of it, but its VERY effective. If your gym has one use it.

I know that one, its a yoga exercise right? Keep doing that kind of stuff, its good. I did physical therapy for a while and a lot of the exercises they taught me helped a lot too...if I can find them I'll scan 'em and post 'em.

Found it! Great piece of equipment.

edit - Heres a gif of it in action, though this guy is using weights to counterbalance and manipulate his movement. I always used it without weights, and try to use it with your arms crossed over your chest. That forces you to use your core instead of counterbalancing with your arms.
