i do a lot of manual handling at work (i'm a diesel mechanic), so instead of doing my back in i'd like to build up muscle in that region. what are some exercises i can do at home for it?

For injury prevention you want to focus on muscular endurance, not strength.

Deadlifts, pull ups, dumb bell rows, you dont have to go crazy, if your not doing anything now....anything you do will really help.
