I've had this cheapo pellet rifle laying around my house for a while - a Powerline with a break-barrel and 1000 FPS. Every time I fire this gun it is a lot louder than similar guns. I've heard that a possible cause of this may be the hollow stock, and have received recommendations of filling it up with foam. What do you guys think? The noise is not a huge issue - it is actually a pretty decent pellet rifle noise aside - was just curious about it.

Is it mechanical sound or dieseling (a loud pop similar to a cap gun)?

Break barrels tend to be louder than expected because the mechanical sound of the spring piston is transmitted into the bones of your shoulder and face. Foaming the stock will only help a little.

If it's a dieseling, that means one of several things:

    1. It's a new gun that needs to be broken in.
    2. It needs heavier pellets.
    3. It's been over-oiled. Run a few cleaning pellets through the barrel. Don't shoot them out though.
    4. If it's dieseling real bad (lot's of smoke coming out of the barrel), you might want to have it checked out by an airgunsmith.

if it's actually going a bit faster than 1000fps it could be breaking the sound barrier causing a sonic crack.

That thing is scary, and should be banned! In fact, it probably shoots those new heat-seaking incendiary pellets!

Seriously, I think I want one of those.

I do want one, but the $249 price tag is a little steep considering I bought a 10/22 for nearly $100 less.

Plus I think that I would seriously fuck up the neighborhoods eco-system within the first couple of months of owning that thing, but on the bright side my wife would become much more experienced at cooking up squirrel/rabbit/cat.
