How close did they come to following the books?

Were there any changes you felt that were not in the spirit of Tolkein's legacy?

    thanks

ive only read the first 2 books but IMO they did a good job telling the story. of course they had to take some stuff out in order to keep it somewhat short but thats what you get trying to adapt a 1000 pages worth of material into around 10 hours of movie. if they wanted to retell every aspect of the book i suppose they could have came out with 6 movies since the lord of the rings trilogy is split up in that way, and even if they did that, each movie could be 5 hours long
