    where they drink from the fountain?and what purpose does him growing and shrinking mean to jrr tolkiens story?

    the water has some enriching properties that the ents gave it, so they grow taller when they drink it.

    It's the Ent Drought - remember Merry telling Pippen about the stuff in the water that made the trees grow taller in Buckland? The hobbits grow several inches after drinking the drought - helping them become better warriors.

    I thought it was also important because although they are still small in terms of the stature of men, [spoiler below]















    it makes it easier for the leaders in Rohan and Gondor to accept them as shield bearers which happens in Return of the King.
