It's really easy, and the software's free. I've got an account at dreamhost and they've got a "one click install", which installs it for you. In fact, if you buy a domain at godaddy, I'll send you the nameservers to point it to and host it for free if you want. I've got a spare 5000gigs/month and tons of free disk space.

if he wants to have hours and hours of downtime and horrid speeds between web and db servers, dreamhost is awesome.

I think you're talking about phpbb forums. OT is a VB Forum. Which cost 85$ a year. Plus, obviously you'll need the domain and web space from GoDaddy or Dreamhost.

If you don't know what you're doing it can be damn hard to install, which I think is what it might be for you. If you do, won't take that long. You're starting from scratch it seems like. Right?

A vB leased license is $85 for a one year lease. After one year you must remove the software or buy another one.

Vb also sells a one time owned license for $160 where you own the software and can keep it for ever and never pay anything ever again for that version. If you want upgrades to new versions it is only $35 dollars per year and that includes support.

Yes I'm talking about phpbb3, not vb. I do like vb a little better but there's nothing wrong with phpbb3. The largest forum in the world is running phpbb (according to big-boards.com).

Don't they both come with an install script, where you just have to create the database and enter the db info etc.?

lol...yea I wasn't recommending him buy an account there. Their db servers really are a fucking joke, can you imagine how many of all those sql intensive "one click install" apps they probably have on each one . All my business stuff's on a vps. The only reason I keep an account there is bc I just constatly rape their servers, usually on OTAH, my DH account is 99% porn. lmao 5000gb/month .

I was just offering to stick his forum and domain on mine for him to get started. You could always move it to another host later.

    They come with install scripts.

PHPBB is a fair script to start with. I would probably go with MYBB because of the way it looks, but everyone has their own personal taste.

vB is by far the best, When I started I looked around as well. Choose what is best right now and upgrade later.

I love PHPBB, but yeah if you aren't keeping it up to date you're gonna get fucked. It's not if, it's when.

All forums, and scripts for that matter, should be kept up to date. Doesn't matter if you use a free phpbb or a paid vb, if you don't you open yourself up to security risk. Most common updates are security fixes anyway lol.

phpbb is a pretty decent free forum software. It has a ton of free templates out there and a lot of support. But also a lot of people trying to take advantage of it which is why people say to keep it updated. Spambots are also annoying.

VB is the best forum software out there and worth the price if you plan to really push the forum. If it's just a tiny personal forum then no reason to buy it. Whats cool is you could start out with a free forum, like phpbb, and then use the conversion tools to "upgrade" it to VB later down the line if you decide to go with it. It's not perfect but makes it so you can transfer most of your content over to the software.
