    in the next week...

what would you suggest for around 550-800 lense and all!

I honestly dont know where to start, I was thinking about a Nikon d40, or maybe a canon XTI...

I want something that will give me a high enough resolution that will be able to clearly print off large prints and be clear enough to take pictures at night of cities and not have alot of noise...

Please help me out, I dont know where to start and I dont know anything about lenses

    http://forums.offtopic.com/showpost.php?p=77417363&postcount=10

those are some of my photos I have taken with a P&S. I think its time that I step up

thanks for your help in advance

I'm a canon sackrider, and I'd be all over the xti if my budget allowed. But, given that you want to do everything for under 8 bills, you should look at the D40 (despite all the hate in this forum for it). It's a solid entry level camera, and I think they have it available with 2 lenses for around that price (18-55 & 55-200 lenses). Lens availability is limited, but your budget doesn't allow you to go buy a shitload of lenses. Budget for a decent bag, filter(s) and memory cards also.

One thing about D40, you can only use AFS lenses, these are ones with internal motor drive in it. You can't use many sharp primes and most 3rd party lenses with it. I would look for a used D50/D70s, if I were you.

this is true. the d40 is cheaper because it doesn't have an internal drive motor. the other lenses will work, but they won't autofocus.

the only reason people hate on the D40 is for the lack of the internal drive motor for the non AF-S lenses. Ive got a D40 and love it. If I had the money, I would have gotten the D80 instead. Everyone kept telling me to get a D50, but im glad I didnt. If I was gunna get the D70, I would have just saved up a bit more and got the D80 instead.

Don't settle because you are low on funds. I know it's hard but saving and getting something good will make you much happier in the long run.

Xti and kit lens now + used 70-200 F4 L in a few months will make you happy.

pick up the lens used for around 250-350, and a used XT for around 400-500 :dunno:

photography isn't a cheap hobby, if you flinch at a $400 lens (which is actually rather cheap) just get a nice point and shoot and save yourself the headache :p

    Other reasons the D40 sucks....

    1. No light in the top lcd display which means in low light it is a fucking pain
    2. feels a ton cheaper than the other nikons (sounds stupid but this is a major selling point to me)
    3. Kit lens is terrible compared to the Nikon 18-70 which is the kit for the D70

I am well aware of the prices of the lenses, I dont want a point and shoot otherwise i would just stick with what I have! I know that its not going to be cheap but for what I can afford right now is what I am looking at

there is no top LCD display on the D40:hsugh:

it's an entry level DSLR and that's exactly what it does, it gets people into the world of DSLR's and it's doing so quite well.

I would still pick up a used XT and used tamron 28-75 over an XTi and kit lens

you'll learn to really really hate the kit lens, it's terrible

is the Xt going to be good enough to make poster quality prints that are sharp?

I was thinking about going with the xti and kit lense, and upgrade in sep to another lense
