Costco has a steal on the Minolta A2 right now. Its the same ccd as the 8700 with a better lens, less zoom but a wider field of view to start with, and image stabilization, plus a better viewfinder.

The Canon G6 is also a great camera. My gf got one for Christmas, and except for autofocus speed, it really surprised me with how well it handeled. Incredible image quality, I printed off some 13x29 with as much detail as my 10D.

The 8800's out now too...slightly better lens and VR.

Anyways, the Olympus C-8080 seems like a pretty sweet camera and fits very well what you're looking for:

I've never played with one myself though...just going on specs and reviews. I like it mainly 'cause of the 28mm wide end compared to the Nikon's 35mm.

A quick overview of the Nikon 8700, 8800, Olympus C-8080 and the above mentiond Minolta A2...they're all pretty damn similar cameras:

a rebel for 5-6 hundred? you could find a used one maybe, but still need lenses, memory, etc

Go to a store that has a large selection to choose from. Fry's Electronics carries the most total digis, basically all consumer to prosumer except for the nikon's. Try them out, see what you like, how the feel etc

It's a nice camera, but that A2 is expensive as hell. I haven't really seen it any less than $799.

I really enjoy my Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ20 though. Price is good and it'll do pretty much anything you want it to do within reason.

    If money wasn't an issue though, I'd be rocking a 20D or Maxxum7D :o

costco locally had the A2 for 649 2 days ago, might have it online. Considering its retail is 1100, and usually at 1000 with the other 8mp, thats a steal.
