Hey all, first time posting in the Mac Shack:wavey:
I need a laptop for university, and would like to get some suggestions as to what to buy, which size to buy etc.

I am currently looking at the Powerbook G4 15". If i did buy one I would get 1.3+ GHz and 1+ Ram since I want a decently fast machine. I most likely won't be playing games or anything, but I want to have multiple programs open and experience little to no lag. Wouldn't be doing any video/photo editing either. SO, you think I'm making a smart decision looking at powerbooks?

Let me know what you guys think whether it be different specs I should be looking at, or a different laptop all together. Price is somewhat of an issue for me, as i'm looking to spend around $600. Any/all advice is appreciated:wiggle:

What would make me regret getting a G4? I won't be using the laptop for anything fancy, so unless the powerbook would be breaking down on me or something (i need it to last 5 years) then whats wrong with it?

g4 chips were already falling behind so when the intels were released it was a pretty big jump ahead.

just go for a refurbished macbook if you're trying to get a cheap mac.

Care to explain why though? My brother has a 17" G4 and he seems quite satisfied with it.

So I think I'm going to buy a new white macbook. A couple of questions though. Any idea as to when the new generation will be coming in (would kinda suck if i bought this and then a month later the new macbooks are out). Also, I plan on getting 1 Gig of memory..I see people selling extra memory on craigslist so I'm wondering if I could simply add another 1 Gig if I wanted to? I appreciate the responses btw guys

new ones are rumored to be coming in september... but no one knows for sure.

if you get 1 gb they will probably put in 2x512 and fill your two slots, so you'll either want to special order one 1gb stick so u can add another one later.

Add me on msn and we can talk. [email protected]

I probably will go with buying new because of the University student sale ($100 and you get a free ipod touch) but i'll consider regardless..

xenon supra: Can I actually special order requesting a 1 gig stick (for no extra cost)? And would the laptop run fine if only 1 of it's slots was filled?

    Thanks again for all responses

 I know! I'll probably sell the itouch on ebay for like $250 (they go for $200 easy on there) and just keep the printer.

Wait...you are really selling one for 650 shipped? Dude, I might be on this. Could this run Leopard?

What are the full specs? Got any pictures? AIM is mwk1699....I would have to sign up for Paypal but I am interested in this. I am located in Cincinnati, and don't have the funds to drop on a new Macbook because I'm looking to buy a house..but this has my interest.

Alright so I should be picking up the Macbook from my apple store any day now. I only have one concern left, which is the fact that the new gen's should be coming out soon.. As soon as they do, wouldn't my macbook depreciate in value greatly? If the new macbooks would be the same price as the current ones then I think it may just be worth waiting no? If they're lets say $200 or more expensive than the current ones then I'll have no problem with picking one up tomorrow (which I might do anyways, but this issue has been on my mind lately)

why do you care about the value of your laptop going down if you are keeping it for 5 years?

if you need something right now, buy it now. if you can wait, wait a month or so for the new ones. i have no idea what prices will be but generally when the new stuff comes out it's the same price i believe (or cheaper?).

i agree with the recommendations here. aside from performance, the Core2Duo based Macs open up a whole different world with VMWare Fusion and Bootcamp. it helps your Mac be the only computer you need, even if you find that for some reason you have to run some Windows apps.

OS X 10.6 probably won't even support any PowerPC machines (aka pre intel-mac). There goes your 5 years.

I've made my decision. I am waiting for the new macbooks to come out. I would definitely be pissed if I bought one now and a couple of months later a new one came out.

    So the wait begins..:x:

probably a good decision. if nothing else, it'll push down the prices for used current macbooks. you definitely want an intel mac if you plan to keep it for a while.

powerbooks are still great, it really depends on your needs. if all you need is msn, word, internet and itunes, your set with a g4
