Hey all...I know that this topic has been beat to death. I have not shopped for a new TV for 2 years and am just wondering if things have changed in the Plasma vs LCD debate.

What are the pros and cons of both? Thanks OT.

Also, since I will not be buying a bluray/ps3 or anything of the sort (only watch DVD's and HDTV via directtv), does it matter to get a 720 or 1080p (assuming I do not upgrade to bluray/ps3 in the future)?

    Thanks :wavey:

People generally still state Plasma > LCD.

    Plasmas Pros:
    - Picture
    - Price

    Plasma Cons:
    - Heat (shouldn't be a problem)
    - Weight (only matters if wall mounting)
    - Image burn in (not nearly as bad as it used to be but possibility is still there)
    - Ambient light (get one with good anti-glare coating on the screen if you are going to have it in a well lit room)

    LCD Pros
    - Minimum glare
    - No image burn in

    LCD Cons
    - Price vs similar Plasmas

If you aren't going to be watching primarily HD content, when looking at the TVs in the store check out how they handle SD. I just bought a tv a few weeks ago and went with the Sony XBR6 over a Samsung because of this. Some tvs will look like ass when watching SD content while others look good. They all look pretty good when showing HD content.

I honestly preferred the picture of the LCDs I was considering in my final list than the that of the plasma.

You forgot a few lcd cons.
    1. Poor shadow detail compared to plasmas
    2. Still can have motion blur issues

Realistically, I prefer plasma...however, if you have a shiton of light that is uncontrollable, and you had glare out the ass on your crt, then get an lcd. If you get lcd make sure it's the Samsung 6,7 or 8 series. The glossy screen helps the tv produce very good blacks compared to ANY other lcd. Even with alot of daylight, it still stays dark.

    Plasma Off / Plasma On

This is directly 9 feet facing fully open windows at about 5 PM.

As you can see, with picture on, the screen diffuses glare pretty well. However, rarely am I watching TV in the middle of the day. If you work too like normal people, you won't have to worry about it almost ever.

^^ ballin with a Kuro plasma?

I'm a big fan of the Panasonic plasmas, models TC-P42X1 or the TC-P50X1. They're 768p sets with fantastic color and they're extremely cheap, coming in at ~$699 and ~$899, respectively.

    yeah :) I love my Pio 5010-FD

The big thing about Plasmas are their 178 degree viewing angle, and they don't wash out. As you can see, in direct sunlight at an angle, they picture is crystal clear and bright.

I really miss our pioneer plasma, the black 4214 / 42A3HD. Back in 2005, it was the shit. great build quality and the glass screen is something i've always preferred over matte on LCD's (at least tv's - not computers)

    Kuro Crew

Glare is not an issue with me either.

View is from where I normally sit. TV is in Pure mode which is the "dimmest" mode on the sets, but the most accurate in terms of PQ.

TV off and window shades open.

Windows that sit directly to the side.
