Originally I was looking at the Canon EOS Rebel XTi. I am a photography major. I don't need a DSLR for any of my classes at the moment but because I love photography, I want one and figure I would need one in the future anyway. I've always delt with Canon just because my mom works for a company that makes lenses for them and I can get deals on them. I prefer Canon. Opinions please?

Used 20d/30d. And you're a photo major? :mamoru:

What company does she work for? Once you get a canon, you're just going to want L glass, so it doesn't matter who she works for....unless its Canon.

unless the company she works for is making lenses canon is branding for themselves, wouldn't he be able to go with any manufacturer? i mean sigma, tamron, etc. make lenses for all camera makes.

I am a newbie at photography and have the XTI and I really like it. You should be able to get the body only for less than $400 then get some decent glass with the money left over.

    I have a Canon 50mm f/1.4 that I really like.

heres some of my newbie-quality work I shot with that lens, some are in low lighting. The only real reason to upgrade for me at this point to a better camera is higher ISOs and less noise/better noise control at 1600+ ISO, you can see the noise in alot of these shots that are taken in low lighting at 1600 ISO:

I think i got the Xti from costco at around $700 with the memorycard, but looking back, it is a mistake because it was the one with the crappy kit lens 18-55 i believe. the lens is just under $300. if you're gonna go for the XTI just get the body without the lens.

i'm more comfortable with cannon. don't ask why because other than the fact that my mom works for the people who make the lenses i really dont have a reason..but even if she didnt work there id still prefer them. :dunno:

I think the k100d super or the k10d money permitting would be great starter dslrs. I wouldn't mind a k10d with the 18-250 :naughty:

Of course the question is do you want to lock yourself into the pentax brand. An xt or the xti is probably the better choice considering the obvious upgrade choices body wise. Not to mention the glass.
