looking to either do a ar-15 build or a 870 build.

i know i will take both hunting at one point or another.

if i go ar-15 i want a medium-long barrel, some sort of light, optics i can use in deer hunting.

870 would probably be flashlight, maybe some optics and use it for pig hunting / home protection.

any info/ builds you know that are tried and true?

Not necessarily. You can put together a respectable AR for ~$700.

Probably without a scope. Depends on the glass you get though.
I mostly meant just the gun itself. To get a gun put together and make it functional, about $700.

    The options are endless though.

because if i do build a ar, im going to want it to replace my aging .303 british that i use for deer. so factor in what...$300-$400 for a good scope?

I'm not going to jump all over you, but why an AR for deer/pig hunting, when there are clearly better rounds out there for that type of hunting?
Not that you CAN'T hunt with an AR - you most certainly can - but common AR rounds, especially .223, are not really the greatest for that type animal.

where i hunt the range never exceeds 100 yards. I've hunted with .223 before when the scope broke on my rifle. If you dont take stupid shots .223 is more than enough.

    <--- not a hunter
do you need a scope to take a deer at 100 yards or less?

No, but it sure makes it easier. Depends on gun too.
People hunt with shotguns all the time... I don't care for it, but it is possible.

we occasionally hunt with shotgun. slug loads make it much easier. the land we are on is mostly wooded area, so sometime we only take shotguns loaded with either heavy shot or slugs.

and yes i want some sort of optics on it.

AR10 w/ 10x super sniper scope is my vote

  25. An AR-10 would definitely be better for deer than an AR-15. Of course, you could just build an AR-15 in a caliber other than .223 and have a great deer rifle too.
