Looking for something for my dad's b-day. I hate to buy accessories of any kind, as I'm not 100% sure of everything he has, so I'm thinking about just getting him a cheap ($100-$200) .22 rifle. I'm almost positive he doesn't have one, and I figured it'd be good for him to just waste a bunch of ammo with cheap. I know he'd only use it for targets, and it seems better than just buying some trinket bullshit he'll put on a shelf and let collect dust.

Any suggestions or better ideas? Basically I'm looking to keep it $200 or under. I'm thinking either a gun, or perhaps something that would come in really handy while hunting that most people wouldn't already have. :dunno:

There is only really one .22 rifle to look for in that range, the good old Ruger 10/22. Tons of accessories for it if he wants to play around but still a damn good rifle stock.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Doesn't walmart sell them?

I thought I saw one there, but it's been a long time since I've bought anything from wal-marts sporting goods section.

It'll be easier for me to just but it from there, so I guess I'll go pick one up friday for him. The shops I go to are usually closed when I actually have time to go buy something.

What are your state laws. In good ol CA, it would be better for someone to get him a gift cirtificate for the exact value of the gun, so you dont have to transfer it (costs an exta 10 bucks at big 5). But not many states do that.

    PS. I second the 10/22

Closest gander for me is an hour and a half away. Regarding the gun laws, it'll probably stay in my name, I'll just give it to him, I'll inherit it eventually anyway, at least that's what he'll say.

I checked at wally world this morning, the one with the SS barrel is $214. I'm thinking that's what I'll get him. He already has his CCW permit.

This is what I bought him, and he loved it. Thanks for the recommendations everyone. On a side note, I don't think I'll buy another gun from wal-mart, it was a pain in the ass. Took 45 minutes for them to "review" the paperwork I filled out. Guy checked it 5 times after I filled it out, they had already run the background check, which obviously came back ok. I'm just going to stick to my local gun shop from now on. :hs:
