It has the 4.0, which afaik is a very reliable engine. But Do these things have speciific problems? IIRC, they have probs with water pumps. I've heard thinga bout jeep/chrysler tranny's not being worht a fuck. What about the rear end, are those decent in these?it is a 4wd laredo

I've heard they do decent on mileage considering as well.

    Off road capabilities?
    common problems?
    Things to look for?

reason I ask is because someone is selling one for 1300 bucks, seems to run and drive fine, going to drive it tommorow...it does have 200k miles though, but still it will probably only cost a grand...seems like it could be a good winter veichle at least

If you want to wheel I'd go XJ (Cherokee) just because of more availability for parts and such.

4.0 FTW. Water pump is a possibility at that kind of mileage, look out for the CPS

    Tranny sucks, but thats life.

Rear end is either a Dana 35 crapaxle or a slightly less crappy aluminum Dana 44. They'll work great for street use but will grenade in short order with big tires off road.

    For 1300 minus whale.

Thats what I figured. I'm sure I can pick it up at 1000 or less. This *probably* wont be to much more then a street thing/occasional muddy field blast. Probably a decent winter/rain car, so i can run drags on my other car.

    Love to hear more thoughts/comments.

still worth $1k, but x2 on the xj, youll keep the 4.0 and get better transmission, and better mpg, its lighter

i has 3 of em, 92 and two 98s, 560,000 miles between them

the trannies are ok ... at best.

plan a rebuild at about 100-150k .... seeing as it already has 200 on it im assuming the tranny has either been replaced, been rebuilt, or is about to blow up.

check the maintenance records and see which of those it is.

pumps really arent a big issue .. i have been through multiple ZJs and multiple 4.0s and never had a bad pump ....

Put 3 CPS in three different 4.0s though :o :o

rebuilt the tranny twice on my 98 Zj and 3 times on my 97 TJ .... pieces of shit.

    still ... jeep FTW

Roughly how much does a rebuild on one of these run?
