I'm looking to buy my first AR and a few questions. I'm leaning towards a base model SW M&P15 ORC or Bushy ORC. I've heard good things about both and Stag as well. I'm looking for something I can shoot targets/range and also for HD. I'd just like something base model as I'm sure I'll be replacing parts at some point and don't want to go ape shit right off the bat. I was hoping to stick with .223 since ammo was cheaper and I'm sure I'll be shooting quite often. If I went with .556, do they make a .22 conversion kit so that I can plink at a small price? What is the difference in range for a .223 versus .556 round? That's also a deciding factor since I'd like to be able to shoot farther for targets. All in all, I'm looking for a base model (cheaper the better) good quality AR that I can make exactly what I want when I figure out what that finally is.

Yep, CMMG bargain bin is where it's at for inexpensive AR's

Had mine at the range today and it's dead on. I'm VERY happy with it. It was brand new when I opened it. Put ~150-200 rounds through it today with no issues at all.

    Went from here:

    To here for about $825ish

Do you mean .223 and 5.56? An AR will shoot both... 5.56 is a NATO round.

Or am I missing something here? :o

5.56 an .223 are essentially the same thing for an AR novice.
If the gun is stamped 5.56, it will fire both. If it is stamped as .223, then it should only be used with .223 cartridges. You can get a .22 conversion for the weapon for under $200.

CCMG is the best deal around for getting into ARs.

so some of you guys have bought these bargain bin ARs? I'm also looking into an AR. I had orignally planned on building one but they can sure get pricey. I'm no brand snob or anything either, if it works and is reliable I dont care who makes it.

With that in mind, any chance i would be disappointed in one of these bin guns?

Seems almost to good a deal to pass up.. or to be true

you have pretty much zero chance of being disappointed with the bargain bin rifle if you purchase it to shoot and use, and not to baby and be a safe queen. Even then, I have heard that they are all arriving to the purchasers in great condition.

Yep, check post 3 for pics of mine. I was totally paranoid about getting a POS but I was pleasantly surprised. Mine arrived packaged well and looked brand new. Colors match well enough and it had M4 feedramps, mil-spec buffer tube with Tapco collapsible stock, Tango Down pistol grip, F marked and pinned front sight. Add a rear sight and a mag and you have a complete rifle.
The only issue was that the flash hider didn't look brand new. It looks like it's been sitting in a parts bin for a little while. It would have looked like that after I took it out anyway, so it didn't bother me at all. My FFL got it about 3 days after I ordered it.

I put about 150 rounds through it last week and it was spot on after some sighting. I wouldn't hesitate to order another one at all.

mstad has one too and is one of the ones who talked me into the CMMG.

CMMG bargain bin rifles are good to go. Just do a google search and see if you can find anybody anywhere that was disappointed with getting one, I tried and I couldn't.

For those recommending the bargain bin rifles, how much do you shoot per week/month/year?

I take mine out and shoot for fun at least once a month, as well as shooting it at matches around here.

You can build a NICE weapon for $1000 if you're a savvy shopper. Both the Stag and Smith are nice, the M&P receiver is made by Stag, FWIW.

at what range is a 11.5" rifle good for? i'm assuming more for home defense, and close range target shooting? but like.. how many yards?
