Looking for an upscaling DVD player

    depends on what you want. The Oppo 971 and 981 are your best bets in terms of performance vs price.

    however, you can land the Toshiba HD-A2 and HD-A3 for $100-$170 now as well, and have as good an upconverting capability and you get HD-DVD to boot.

    However, if you are also looking for a "universal player" that has good audiophile like audio capabilities, then you need to step up to DVD players like the Denon 2930 or 3930, etc, which are pricey.

    given that you are an Avless n00b, I'm gonna go on a limb and assume you are a broke ass mother fucker, so your best bet is to get one of these HD-DVD players and call it a day.

    ssabripo is right on...

    I have only one thing to add. I've got a Samsung DVD-R135 which records to DVD and upconverts to 720p or 1080i on playback through HDMI.

    Can be had for around $100 if you're interested in being able to record to DVD as well as just play them.
