Being a dumbass 21 year old at the time, I bought and quickly sold a Chinese SKS that I had picked up for cheap from a co-worker. That was 7 years ago, and I am just now realizing how much I should have just held on to it. I really liked shooting that gun.

Now I'm getting some more weaponry, I figure I'd like to pic another one up and play around with it. I'd love to drop cash on an AR, but I'm just not sure how much I'll shoot it at this point, so I'm going to try and start small and see how much I end up shooting rifles for fun(and some groundhogs on the property). I don't want a $700+ rifle just sitting in the closet.

What I'd like to do is see if I can luck into a beater SKS for 150 or less and mod it a little. Tapco stock, sight, etc. Maybe 300-350 in it total.

So, two fold here, if anyone is sitting on an SKS they want to get rid of, let me know. :x: Also, didn't see much in the rifle thread, but anyone ever tactical an SKS, or is it a huge waste of time and money? If you got one, post some pics, I'd like to see them other than on the Tapco site.

    Thanks!

Is it complete junk or just not quite up to OT standards? There's a difference. :mamoru:

    Any other stock suggestions?

Tapco is shit. Spend the little bit extra and get some decent gear.

Okay, what isn't considered junk for a reasonably priced stock?

why again do you want to change out the stock? and i dont know how easy it'll be to find an SKS for less than $150. The only ones i've seen in CA are 300+; granted CA has a more expensive market, i still dont think you'll find one that cheap.

Just bored I guess and don't want to spend 1K on a new gun. I've seen decent ones going around here for $200, so I don't think it's unpossible.

Again, if there's another long gun(except a .22LR, I have those) that has decent available aftermarket stocks that you would suggest, I'm all ears. I just figured the large aftermarket SKS would be a decent one to play around with. :dunno:

Any suggestions on another decent rifle? Not a huge fan of the original wood stock look and I found that Tapco stuff for an okay price so I thought "Why not?". Just looking to get something to play around with for a couple years to see if I would take it out and shoot regularly.

Spend your money on ammo and training. Leave the Crapco stuff off your gun.

I've got farmland I can setup and shoot on all day right outside my back door. What training are you suggesting other than repetition? Like I said, this is just for target, some groundhogs and as most of us do, just to have lying around.

Just buy an AK instead of trying to make a franken ak with tapco parts bolted to a sks. Do your own saiga conversion.

I've looked at them but they are going pretty high around here...like $550+. At that price, I'd just find a basic AR for a couple hundred more.

What type of class are you suggesting?

No, you've got me all wrong. I want a franken AR, not AK. ;)

Then build the ar. Bolting a bunch of crap to a sks is polishing a turd.

I was looking at that Mindset Labs site; it's only about 2 hours from me. We'll see, thanks.

Probably stupid, but an honest question. What makes the AK a better gun than the SKS? i.e. why pay double for the AK if I want to just put a poly stock on it and just go shoot shit in my backyard anyway? I was always under the assumption that they were fairly similar guns. Remember, I'm quite the newb to rifles, so this is honestly me trying to learn the crap from the decent buys.

    Thanks

Don't do it. They are like the Tapco of the training world.

if you want plastic on your sks, buy one with it already on... it's usually cheaper, than an sks with wood... plus after that, you're buying the plastic.

 you fucking guys. The OP is looking for a back yard plinker not a fighting rifle and the accompanying classes. Buy the SKS and shoot it. The tapco stuff will be less comfortable to shoot with and most people think it looks like shit, but if you like the way it looks go for it.

Buy the SKS and just shoot it. The SKS is a decent rifle for the money, but leave off the Tapco stuff.

His comment was referring to the fact that most Tapco/tacticooled SKS rifles end up trying to be like an AK... pistol grip, folding stock, mag fed. But it's never quite as good as an AK even though you end up spending enough money on it that you could have bought an AK.
