I decided to make my ar15 16 incher into longer range rifle.

Can you guys recommend me any optics under $600

    maybe 1-4x or 3-9x?

I think my mad would probably be 300 meters out. most likely will shoot 100 meters

Leupy VXIII 3.5x10x40 non AO. Send it in to Leupy and have the knobs converted to M1 turrets. Rock on.

Great performance for a relatively low amount of cash.

Lowest power these super snipers come in is 10x ???

    Is 10x overkill for hunting?

Probably not for big game. I wouldn't use it much closer than 100 yards but that's just me.

Hunting where, with what, and at what range?

10x is fairly flexible. I really love the shit outta my Leupy M8 6x's though.

I wouldn't want a fixed 10x for hunting anything but varmints unless you could just about guarantee your shots were going to be a fair distance away.

Trijicon makes their Accupoint in 1-4 and 3-9x variants. The illuminated recticle is pure win. I just picked up the 3-9x mildot and love it.

trijicon accupoint tr21r (1x4). Best scope for short and medium range (good out to 400 yards.)

A fixed 10x scope is going to be really slow at 100 yards and in. Variable power is definately the way to go. I run a 3x9 but only because I have a secondary short range optic.
