I'm looking for a new handgun, probably as a new carry gun to take the place of a J-frame or at least when it is possible to.

I was leaning towards a BHP or BHP clone, but I do not like the magazine safety and I do not want to modify a carry gun.

So what I am looking for is double stack 9mm pistol, similar to the BHP.

My list of what I am looking for

    1) Full size
    2) 9mm (9x19)
    3) Semi-atuo
    4) External Hammer (DA/SA are both ok, DA must have decocker)
    5) Manual safety
    6) Double stack magazine (I have never found a single stack that fits my hand as well as a double stack)

I welcome all suggestions, however if you have something that is different from what I am currently looking explain why you think I should change my criteria.

I've already had a couple people tell me that I should look at the Beretta 92, so I am just trying to get a grip on a starting point here.

The external safety really isn't necessary. Look at the following guns:

    Hammer-fired
    CZ 2075 RAMI
    Sig P250
    Sig P229
    FN Herstal FNP9

    Striker-fired
    Glock 17
    M&P9c
    Walther P99c QA

I think I covered the majority of the popular double-stack 9mm handguns that are small enough for carry. For reference I have a P229 9mm for carry and liked shooting my friends' P99, M&P9, and P250.

Edit: Just realized you want a full-size gun and don't feel like rewriting my whole post. :o Most people want slightly smaller guns for carrying.

Taking the mag disconnect out of a BHP is no big deal. I would not let that hold me back from getting one. Not to mention, any trigger job you have done will take it out. BHP's have a kinda shitty trigger stock.

I've had some nice BHP's, and my father still does. I grew up on them and 1911's. I gave my last one to my friend as a welcome home present from Iraq, and don't miss it one bit. A CZ75 SA is everything the BHP is, and more. Keeping one stock would be a shame, as a tuned example is better than any BHP ever thought about being.

+1 for a '75SA, but do yourself a favor and don't leave it stock.

A can of the new Glock Killer Bees Energy drink

I may look at some slight;y smaller guns, but I don't want to get too small, if I can find some of those laying around at the gun show in the next couple of weeks, I will handle them and see if anything fits my hand well.

I am not completely opposed to looking at striker fired, but I would like to hear is there is something vastly superior to them or even just to one model you posted that just happened to be striker fired.

I'm going to be steadfast on one thing from my original post, I do not want to carry a modified gun. Most other criteria are flexible, given a good reason I would reconsider. Besides I do not need a tuned tack driver as a carry gun, I need a reliable weapon with which I can hit center of mass at distance.

Also my BHP is actually a M1935, so it is old plus it belonged to my grandfather, so rather than modify it and risk it spending years in a police evidence locker, I am going to purchase a new task specific gun.

I don't make a habit of selling guns, sorry. Besides, it is a fun little range gun, I just don't practice enough (and can't really practice as much in one session as i would like to) to be accurate enough with it for my liking, plus there are outfits that a j-frame will still work better with than a larger pistol.

I have thought a bout a Glock at one time or another and to be honest, they do not fit my hand quite right. Besides, I'm not partial to weapons you have to pull the trigger to disassemble. I also find a well designed manual safety comforting. I don't have a grudge against Glocks like some people seem to have at times, its a personal preference thing for me.

    See above

A friend of mine was recently looking for his first handgun. He had almost the same requirements as you. External safety, double stack, hammer fired, SA/DA with decocker. The only difference was he wanted a .40.

He ended up buying an HK USP40 Compact.

The guns I posted up are smaller than full-size but are far from compact. Usually you only sacrifice 2 rounds of capacity and a little bit of barrel length, but it makes a big difference in the ability to conceal them.

Hammer vs. Striker fired is pure preference. Some people like striker fired guns because they have a single, consistent trigger pull weight that's as light as hammer-fired SA guns. Some people dislike them because they don't have the ability to second-strike a bullet if it doesn't ignite.

The standard for striker-fired guns is a Glock, but if you don't like the ergos or sights, try the Smith & Wesson M&P9c.

I shot well with my father's P226, so I chose the Sig P229 because it has the same trigger, sights, and ergos but in a slightly smaller setup. Stock mags are 13rd, but i found Mecgar 15rd mags so my capacity is the same as the full-size P226.

    Good luck! :wavey:
