I currently have a Glock 27 for use as a backup, but i would like to find something smaller and lighter to carry. I've pretty much narrowed it down to either a J frame, or something like the LCP which a few of my coworkers carry. At this point i would rather go with the revolver than the semi automatic for a backup, especially considering you're not gaining much in the way of number of rounds with the LCP.

My question is, which round would be preferred ballistically speaking...the .380, .38, or .38 +p? How much difference is there between the .380 and the .38 fired through that short of a barrel? And is there enough of an advantage to .38 +p to warrant its use?

.380 sucks. If you must get a jframe, I'd get a 642, it handles the .38 +P fine. I've never been a fan of jframes because of the shitty capacity and the fact you'll need A LOT of training to be able to reload one during a real life, stressful, situation.

Have you looked at the Keltec PF9? It's small, very thin, and light. 7+1 of 9mm is nice to. Mine has been 100% reliable and you can get it for a lot cheaper than a jframe.

  3. The jframes rock because they're very dependable, reasonably priced, and easily concealed. Remember you want this as a backup gun. I wouldn't worry about only having 5 shots in a BACKUP gun. I'd rather have something with as much reliability as possible.

.38 special is a significant step above .380. You would be fine with a low recoil full wadcutter std pressure .38 spl round or a .38 special +p speer jhp. Both are excellent, I carry both.

I use a Kel-tec pf9 as a primary. If you're looking for backup, i'd go Jframe or P3AT sized, you're not going to get anything smaller than that.

Personally the PPS feels much better in my hand, but then again each person is unique and their preferences vary.

Do any of you guys have the list of acceptable self defense ammo? Does it include .38?

  12. Cliffs: .380 sucks, don't use it. Reliability is king. Get a j frame.

I found out yesterday that some of our officers were keeping AR pistols in thier cars under the seat as "backup guns" The nice thing about the Glock though is if you have a full size for your duty weapon, the 27 will be able to use the same magazines if they are the same caliber, which could be nice should you need to use your backup in a firefight.

  18. My uncle is in the FBI and he carries a G27 on his ankle. I think he's nuts.

I've seen officers do an IWB holster under thier duty belt, which is a bit strange, but another option.

Is typing that apostrophe easier than typing an e? I'm just trying to figure out why you'd go out of your way to spell something incorrectly.
