    Dude,

Hope you can help me out a little. I am looking into starting up a martial art of some sort and I below is a list of expectations. Keep in mind I am a big guy and about as flexible as rebar. I have no experience with the arts. Where do I start?

Must be ideal for defensive fighting
Must be friendly for non-tooth picks
I expect it to continue building self confidence

    Thanks in advance.

Also, I do not give a fuck about "honor" in a fight.

Jiu Jitsu. I started it about a month and a bit ago and I can't get enough of it. Don't worry about not being flexible though dude, you become really flexible after going for a while. I sometimes roll with a guy whos 200+ lbs (I'm 145ish) and he was actually telling me today about how much his flexibility has improved. Before he couldn't even touch his kneecap and now he can fully grab this toes, and he's only been going for about as long as I have too.

Is BJJ an art that put people out of the fight quickly? I mean if I gotta smash a face in, cool. If I gotta break a arm or leg, cool. If it gives me enough time to get to my gun or knife, cool.

Also, how do you pick out a school. And are clubs at colleges worth checking out?

Quickly and efficiently (some may disagree)... but it all depends on the instructor too. One instructor teaches us jiu-jitsu for street fights/mma, and another teaches us for competition.

I have no intrest in comp. If I would have to do it to learn, then that's the way it is. I most interested staying in a fight.

I weighed a couple things, mainly I looked at my instructor's background and credentials. Then I checked out the facilities and participated in a class. Rest is history :dunno: I'd ask someone who's been doing it longer than me though lol, they'll probably tell you close to the same thing anyways.

I dunno, I was that way too until I started getting into it. Its pretty damn fun once you start. One thing I suggest though, is to start out WITH gi. It makes your no gi jiu-jitsu a lot smoother in my opinion.

At the same time I'd wait around and see what the muay thai people in here tell you. I've never taken it and can't really vouch for what its all about... it could be more of what you're looking for too.

 alright alright. Whatever you decide to pick up though, chances are it will get you into shape. You might not think so now, but eventually those high kicks won't seem so ridiculous.

No, I am in it to learn. I am really big into firearm training, and I have come to the realization of how silly it is to at not not have basic fighting skills.
