Preferably pump, new or used, what seems to be the best bang for the buck. It's primarily for shooting targets/going hunting...but I'd like it to be a last resort home defense gun.

    1) Remmy 870
    2) Mossberg 500

In that order. I've owned both.

I'm leaning towards the 500, unless I get an email back from a guy selling an 870 for $205. How much should I expect to spend on a 500? New or used. Online pricing doesn't mean crap when I want to buy local.

I bought a 500 combo shotty that came with two barrels for 210. A 18 inch and 26 or 28 vent rib. Can't remember the length exactly.

It was a sale at Big5 sporting goods, dont know if you have those in your area.

Same combo cost me $230 inc. tax. The 870 is about $50 more. If you know someone selling an 870 for $205 that's in good condition, I'd go for that.

Don't think you can go wrong with either. I have an 870P, but the Mossy's are great guns as well.

What they said, if you have a big 5 in your area both of these guns are usually on sale once a month or so for under $240 brand new.

I'm partial to the 500 because the corn cob style pump. Its much easier to grip when the shit hits the fan and your adreneline is pumping.

We don't have any sporting goods stores like that around here. We have Dicks Sporting Goods, and Wal-Mart...that's it.
