It's a 4 door, 5-speed and it has 120k miles on it. Guy will sell it for 5500. I'm thinking about taking it. Am I nuts? I'm looking for a daily driver-type car and this just sorta fell in my lap (ouch).

    There's also a 92 318ic with 120k 5-speed for 4500.

I know they can last forever, but will the maintenance kill me? I'm kinda skurred but I think it'd be cool as hell to own a BMW.

Those things are horribly slow if you care.

Not really worried about speed. Comfort + reliability + cool factor are mostly what I'm looking for.

Is a 120k mile BMW financial suicide?

Depends on how the previous owner(s) have taken care of it. Do they have service records that you can check out? Get the car inspected at the dealership if you're serious about buying it.

dunno if that's the proper translation but frequent service-checks/inspections (?) are def recommended

ok. I bought the 92 318ic and it's beautiful. The only other question I got is:

Do I HAVE to use premium? I thought most cars that demanded premium didn't need it. It says 92-93 only on the gas cap and in the book.

the m3's engine is a totally different beast compared to a 318.

318i is slow and a waste of money, imo. If you are getting an e36 go all out and get an M3, like me. I'm still deciding though. :(

The 318 is the Geo of BMWs. That being said, congratulations on your first BMW. Parts can sometimes get expensive but nothing beats them in my book. I'm also saving up for the M3. I's so addicted to these cars that I have color/trim combinations and mods already picked out. Now if only I can find that elusive money tree.

Despite the 'base' attitude that the 318 gets, its still a good car. That 4 banger will take more of a beating than most 4's on the market today. Save up some money and have all of the maitenance stuff done now. About the fuel, try midgrade for a bit, no less. There isnt much of a price diff between 89-93 when you look at the big picture, so personally, I'd use 93.

the e36 318 is basically an expensive german civic.

sure its slow, but it has the luxuries of leather seats and power windows, and all that good stuff.

    but

    its slow
