nice Garand broseph. can you pull back the op-rod and see what it says on your barrel?

is that ammo commercial, if not what is it?

you mean on top of the bolt? it says d28287-12sa s-b10<>

its a CMP service grade purchased in 2001. just a typical mixmaster of parts, its all SA parts other then an IHC rear sight.

the ammo is remmington UMC 30-06 150gr i pickedup at bass pro shops. 11.49 for 20 cartridges. got 2 boxes, just so i can ping a few water bottles this weekend. soon i'll order a case from CMP.

my friend is getting a CMP Garand soon to. Lucky for me, I am one of three people he knows with access to the private range he would shoot it at :big grin:

CMP ran out of service grade m1 garand's on 9/15/2006. you can get a rack or field grade still though. would be more beat up then mine. mine looks good and is a good shooter ;)

I joined a "private" range here...private as in you pay $100 a year to be a member and they take care of everything other then you provide targets (they have a lounge, covered shooting areas from 25 to 300 yards, keep the grass mowed, etc)

i bought mine from the guy that bought it from CMP in 2001. I paid $600 for it + 25 shipping, and along with the M1 Garand, he send me the CMP certificate, owner manual, and 3 enblocs.

Still a very fair price for not buying it direct from CMP. I got a field grade from them and paid ~$450. My dad says its worth ~$650.

no i mean on the barrel. the right side of the barrel, visible if the op rod is cocked back.

and you're really not supposed to run typical store bought .30-06 thru the M1. the gas pressures upon exiting the barrel are different and can really punish your oprod to the point of bending it.

if you wish to run commercial ammo thru it continuously then get an adjustable gas plug from someone like schuster or mcanns

oh there is says S-A 1-52.

i've read all the stuff about commerical vs greek surplus ammo. I think i'll be ok with the 40 rounds of Remmington UMC 150gr .30-06 until I get some ammo from CMP.

I won't be able to fire it after this weekend for a while anyway because i'm having surgery on october 4th.

so you're sporting a replacement barrel from January of 1952 courtesy of SA. Mine has a barrel from LMR and it's dates 1-51 I believe. A replacement barrel is usually a good thing but it may very well have been abused itself.

40 rounds isn't gonna hurt much but I was talking long term.

and the guy got his order in before they ran out. Personally, I would rather drop the cash on a M1A.
