Because of some incredible legal bureaucrap, Emily cannot return to the U.S. from Christmas break for 6 months. We found out today. She was supposed to be home in three weeks. On groundhog day, as it happens.

have you considered getting an attorney? I know a couple that the wife is in legal limbo for several years now... not fun, I imagine.

Of course - I can visit.

I get three weeks vacation time every year. But it accrues over the year. Right now I have about 0.62 days of paid vacation.

I get a few personal days. Same deal.

I could see her in little bits and pieces in the next couple months, or wait three months and see her in a *slightly* larger chunk of time... cost of flying to Italy and back notwithstanding of course :)eek3:).

The legal details are really complicated and not that interesting. It all makes sense from a certain U.S. government point of view. For some reason I'm paranoid about putting it up on the internet for the time being. However, I will post the details later.

YEARS. Holy shit. Don't scare me like that motherfucker.

No. It wouldn't have been a problem at all.

Actually, that's on a similar note to a question that I asked our lawyer: WAS there something we could have done that would have allowed her to leave the country and come back in a legally "correct" fashion?

This will be the first time in a number of years when she gets to spend her birthday with family.

well she's here in the US, but her legal status is questionable.

dunno what your options are or if the lawyer has suggested it, but this would be a great time to call your congressman, I'd think.

the problem is if she does this & violates her visa status or overstays, she won't be able to leave if she ever wants to come back. If it were me, I'd be afraid that INS would end up catching her, but at the very least she would never be able to visit her family back home, never travel outside the country, etc.

Yes. It's a good idea. It's one of the long-shot routes suggested to us by our lawyer.

what type of communication are you guys able to do? my husband landed this morning and called me, but its $1 a minute to talk, so i know we wont be using that very often. We get blackberry messaging for free which is nice but we were planning on being able to video chat, IM and email as well, and figured that would be our major way of communication this week cause its free. as of right now, the internet in his hotel isnt working...so i'm pretty bummed and hoping that it gets fixed cause i dont know if i can 1. afford to talk to him on the phone and have real conversations all week with that cost or 2. if our fingers can type fast enough on the damn blackberry to have real conversations on there.

all that being said, i hope you guys have some good communication set up, cause this already sucks and i couldnt imagine only semi talking for 6 months :(

The gf is currently on a three week trip in vietnam and I managed to stay sane thru emails and gmail chat. We would typically chat once a day for a bit or talk to skype.
