I told her that I bought a MBP yesterday for a little over $2,500 (with Applecare).
She screamed, "Why's it so expensive? I read in the paper there's laptops for $1,000 that does everything! What's so special about this one? Does it have gold on it?"

How do I explain it to her why a MBP costs over $2,000 in layman's term?

explain to her that there is no 1000 dollar laptop on the market thats even remotely comparable to your new MBP. the extra few bucks you paid (if any) over a identically built PC covers the cost of iLife, and a far superior OS. =D

it is overpriced. It's nice, but they charge a premium because of that fruit they decide to put on the top.

Actually most apple computers are cheaper if you get the exact same parts. Other computers use slower processors for example to cut costs. I shopped dell vs apple for my computer. I saved $200 by buying apple instead of dell.

but it makes sense to people that have no mac experience. i mean, shes never used it before, so what the hell does she know? he needs to explain the same benefits to her, that anyone new to macs should know...

not really, they are quite a bargain. but you do pay a small amount for style and good engineering.

we've been over this... feature for feature it's the same price as a comparable unit. yes it's overpriced if you compare it to a $500 special. but then it's not a fair comparison.

not to mention overall quality of parts. Not only do they use the fastest and best pars available to them, but they also make sure thy don't use bad parts. Thy have refused shippments of bad parts in the past just to keep up the quality while even hurting the number of units they could produce.

i guess so, but they still screw stuff up in assembly. remember the excessive amount of thermal compound they used in the mbp

make a Dell with the same specs as a MBP, same warranty/service, and equivalent software to what iLife compares to.

    you can't.

But I can get a laptop that does nearly everything a MBP can do at similar speeds for $1300. Sure, an extra $700 will get aluminum, OSX, iLife, lit keyboard, and a few more MHz, but is it really worth it?

And will I spec it out? Absolutely not, do it yourself. I don't care how you justify spending the extra hundreds of dollars. If it makes you happy, fine.

btw, I owned a Macbook Pro for a year and a half. I spent $2100 on it. I could justify it back then somehow, but now I don't know how I did. I ended up selling it a few months ago for $1100.

I just built a same size Dell Inspiron to compare to the Apple MBP 2.2ghz 15" version.

Dell Inspiron came out to be 2200 dollars, the MBP is 1,999.

It's more durable than the cheap computers and it doesn't have to be reformatted every year.
