Al Roker was talking to a Brigadier General on ABC (I think ABC. The one with the 5 rings), about some Toys for Tots stuffs.

At the end, Al Roker was like "Thank you Major General...err Brigadier General."
Then, and I know any Marine here has heard it 100 times, the Marine said "Thanks for the promotion..." in his scowled Marine face.

Maybe i'm the only one who thinks this is funny. :mamoru:

You are actually right to a point. Major General was originally named Sgtt Major General and later on they dropped the Sgt and it is now just called Major General, hence the reason it is lower in rank to Lt. General. It's basically the same wasy as how General used to be referred to as Captain General but they also dropped the Captain and just now refer to the military rank as General.

Ok, here's a harder one for you... how did the US end up adding General to Brigadier?

If it's gold or silver, salute it and refer to it as Sir or Ma'am. :coolugh:

I wouldn't know for sure. I would assume the title Brigadier was given to an officer in charge of brigades and the role has expanded since thus adding on the rank of general? I know the British Army at one time had Brigadier generals and so the US probably came across the term from British influence around the time of the Revolutionary war.
