I'm PCSing on monday and I'm driving. I was planning on staying in a few hotels on the way but then i realized there's a couple of air force bases right on the way and i know you can stay there for free when you're on orders.

So my question is can i just walk in there without a reservation since its such short notice and be like hey do you have a room or is it too late?

Yes, if you are on orders, they have to give you a room. If there are no rooms, ask for TLF, if there are no more TLF rooms, ask for a letter of non-availability.

u cant stay for free, u will pay and your per diem will re-emburse you. The whole orders thing is iffy your not on orders to that base, your on orders to another base so you should call and made a reservation. If they have no avaliabilty they dont have to give you a room or a non avaliblity... your being paid per diem to stay in any hotel.

non avalibility is when you get to your final base and they dont have a room

AF lodging usually only books up to 80% capacity so that they will have rooms for people who are on orders. If you are PCSing from one base to another and stay at a base in between, then there is a very high chance that they will have a room for you. They only care if you are on orders, not what kind of orders, just that you have them. Everything else is Space-A. If you are on orders of any kind and you go to military lodging and they do not have room, you can receive a non-availability letter.

yea their is a high likely hood they will have a room but its always best to make a reservation. A non availability letter does you no good while your pcsing, you are given 110 a day to pay for a hotel...any hotel, what good will that letter do you...none. Non avaliabilty letters are when you get to your final base and they have no room becasue the 10 days you are entitled to are for on base rates and you need that letter to be justified in staying off base and theirfore finance paying your 10 days off base.

Good point, reservations are highly encouraged and can be made well in advance. We don't know where the guy is staying. I have been to cities where you would be hard pressed to find a hotel for $110 a night in a safe area. A letter of non-availability would allow him to stay in a hotel and not be penalized for the higher amount.

Bets thing for the thread starter to do is to call the Lodging offices of the AF bases he plans to stay at and let them know he is on orders and needs a room.
