if i install unbutu on my laptop, will the function keys (brightness, volume are the only ones i'm really concerned about) still work? would it work automatically, i.e. its independent of the operating system, or would i have to find some linux version of their software.

brightness will work no prob... Volume will prolly work, but it may take some keymapping... depends on the lappy.

you need to keymap them... It's in the keyboard config panel.
