So I'm trying to install Ubuntu Linux (any distro is fine but went Ubuntu) and all is going well until it attempts to load a GUI of any kind.

After it loads all the files up and as soon as the first dialog box comes up the graphics takes a shit. The window looks like its been shot into many many pixels, however, the background is still solid and the mouse cursor still works.

I basically cannot get passed this point.

There is one point before the splash screen where you can pick some basic option, i've tried every available option under VGA. Funny thing is that it seems to not care what i put and picks its own resolution anyways.

I've downloaded the file many times and wasted many cds.. I've even tried to use the new prototype/install.exe that they had. Same problem, same point.

If you guys can point me to the right direction, I'd love it.

Cliffs: Attempted to install Ubuntu, graphic takes a shit, tried many downloads & cds, new prototype/install.exe is pretty cool.

    EDIT:
oh and I've checked my hardware against their compatibility list, and it checks out.

    but I have:
    Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI
    7800GT
    many many Hard Drives
    ACD 23" Display

    grub Error 17
17 : Cannot mount selected partition
This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the
filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB.

Will randomly picking other partitions make this message go away?

Well, GRUB is the boot loader so it's trying to load the /boot partition I believe. If you've got the boot partition set in the bootloader to something it's not, then you could change it that way, otherwise your partition might be hosed.
