SVT fans rejoice! A new Ford super-truck is coming this fall

    2004 SVT Lightning Concept

It's been several years since Ford last offered a Lightning version of its F-150 pickup truck but it looks like it will soon strike again. In spite of plummeting sales of big trucks, a high-performance variant of the new 2009 F-150 will launch later this fall, likely at either SEMA or the Los Angeles Auto Show. Ford showed a concept version of an SVT F-150 in 2004 that never made it to production. In March 2007, SVT's Jamal Hameedi told us that a high-performance truck was under development.

While participating in the Ford Racing Invitational media drag racing event this weekend, SVT declined to get any more specific than "a new SVT truck is coming" and "later this fall." When pressed, he did acknowledge that it's based on the big truck platform and that is was unrelated to the so-called Raptor truck. An obvious guess would be an F-150 powered by the GT500 engine. Since the GT500 already uses the cast-iron truck block, it would be an easy installation. Whether it will use two or four wheels to deliver all that torque is unknown, but after my experience trying to put GT500 power down this weekend, hopefully it'll use all four.

Update: After hearing from someone at Ford and talking to Mike Levine from PickupTrucks.com this new truck will almost certainly not be called a Lightning. In fact according to Mike, this new truck is likely to be the new Harley-Davidson F-150.

AWD, not 4wd, would be best.

Develop it (not that they actually will).

Lightnings could turn over the tires so easy because...well they're trucks. There is no weight on top of the rear wheels untill the truck gets moving. I dont beleive that it is in good practice to use a convetional 4wd system on the road.

    500hp, 6-speed, AWD

That is an F-150 I can like.

This totally makes sense in a world of four-dollar gas.

They could've at least made a high-performance diesel. It's not like it's that hard to slap a huge turbo on a diesel and bolt on a really tall final drive gearset to convert all that torque into speed.

I didn't say they shouldn't have made a sports truck, did I? I said they should've made a diesel sports truck. Truck. Diesel. They work well together. Quit bitching.

Why ford is even looking to make a new lightning is beyond me. :dunno:

They should put a turbo'd (or TT) six in a Ranger. A "Lightning" for the age of high-dollar fuel. Call it "Thunder", or something.

Hell, guys have been swapping turbo 2.3s into them, with great results. I'd like to do one of those myself, or maybe a SHO swap.

Oh sure, you can get away with saying it's not perfect just the way it is.

dodge dropped the SRT-10, Chevy may not make another Silvy SS, so they figure if there isn't a market, they'll force one so to speak and entice people enough.
Actually, that's really what the first Lightning /454SS did; they created a market that people became a fan of, not vice versa

Nothing is 'perfect' right out of the box. That's why we mod. And everyone has their own vision of what a 'good' production vehicle should be. I happen to agree that this is a poor time to introduce a gas-guzzling monster; I just took it a little farther and suggested alternatives. :)

Hell, if I bought a Smart, that bitch wouldn't stay stock for long. :x:

I suggested an alternative, too. Turbodiesel. But whatever.

You ever seen the video of the Smart car with the Suzuki Hayabusa engine in it? Dude was doing doughnuts around a pedestrian. That's how small the fucking thing is.

Badass vid, but the car loses it's passenger seat with the Busa swap.

I'd have to do it differently. Like my beater, basic function (and preferably, stock appearance) would be retained.

I'd argue that people dropping big-blocks into short bed short cab 1/2 tons identified a potential market, and I'd also argue that the original SS454 and Lightning were simply manufacturer responses to obvious market conditions. I.E. lots of trucks, lots of tuners, no factory "race truck".

A diesel Lightning or TTV6 Ranger would do that- provide a product that doesn't currently exist but that customers are building anyway.

Edit- not many people are buyilding turbo rangers, but people are asking for a small truck with some power.

Mini-truck with a smallblock V8 or hefty I-6 would pwn.

    S-10 with an LS2...

Would be 10 times more badass if it came with a 4-link from the factory.

Trailblazer's power plant has got to fit into something. That I-6 is a badass engine...it just got off on the wrong foot with the heavy mall rated trail scooter.

Hell, bring back the Typhoon/Syclone.

But with, say, a bumped-up S/C 3800 (with intercooler) and sequential-shift 6-speed, getting power down via AWD.

It'd be fun giving 'sports cars' a good run in a truck.

It wouldn't be cheap, but the 3800 isn't bad on fuel, and has gobs of torque.
