What is the best hotshoe option when shooting a club, nightlight, or poorly lit jobs? I got asked today by 2 different people to shoot events at clubs. As of now I just have a SB600. Would a flash bracket work better then a ring flash? If so what style of flash bracket is better? I would assume one where the flash could be moved around in different angles.

Does anyone have any tips for shooting these types of events? I haven't done it before so just trying to figure out the best way to approach it. More then likely I'll just be shooting singles or groups that aren't that far away in distance.

this... and more importantly pay attention to your backgrounds. Listen to the music and wait for the strobes and what not.

do NOT bounce the light off the ceiling. I absolutely hate it when people take "club" shots, and it looks like everyone is dancing w/ the lights on.

I like that Stroboframe a lot. Not big on having to hold on the frame good reviews on this one.

I have a newton bracket and It is great if you want to use diffusers like the lumiquest bounce products

I also have a stroboframe press T which is great for using direct flash since the flash head is the same orientation as the camera

Same guy owns both places and these are sorta trial runs to see if he can use the shots for some promo and other ideas he has. Hopefully he'll like them and I get more work out of this.

I don't do much with nightclub photography, so my experience is limited.

Some prefer using a sync cord and holding the hotshoe flash in various positions. Others will use something like a Fongsphere and shot the flash straight up. Others use a flash bracket. I've used the Fongsphere and it's done fine. You'll need to tweak the settings based upon the environment you're working in.

Here's a shot with a 580EX shot straight up, 2nd curtain sync. I forget the flash power... probably around 1/16.

living in DC is insane, but no one wants to anyway. Maryland is boring and pricey.

I like northern VA the best. I am 10min from DC, and the neighborhoods are a lot nicer. Rent isn't terrible for the income, but houses close to DC are $400,000 just for a crappy end unit 2br townhouse

Oh, DC, yeah  I was up there last year for a bit. There were some lofts on top of a starbucks, across from the whole foods near the smithsonian. The prices on those things :bowrofl:

i rarely go in to DC for night life. it's either gangster wanna-bes or trust fund babies from the DC colleges

VA side is much more fun and laid back. Much better people.
