I hear on these forums so often that it is a bad thing to lift in order to look good. I for one would much rather look good than look like a powerlifter as I do not do competitions. I just dont see the problem with motiviating yourself with the prospect of people looking at you and going, "wow, I wish I had that body."

Just thought I would hear your opinions on lifting to look good.

To each their own. Most people workout to look better... nothing wrong with it.

It's a factor, but I want to look good because it makes me feel better about myself not because it makes girls want to give me sucky-sucky. Though I may feel better about myself because girls like it? Who knows.

i generally find that if you end up lifting with goals of getting stronger, etc then looking good (or at least better than you used to) will come as a byproduct, unless you're snarfing cookie dough rolls 4x a day

I do everything, I just concentrate on a workout that will make me look the best, not necesarily be strongest.

I don't know, I probably think this way because I was always the fat kid in school and looking good makes me feel good.

    :ugh:

not sure what this thread about.

I lift purely for aesthetics. There's bodybuilders - who do just that.

And theres powerlifters - who dont give two fucks and lift for strength, to each their own?

who gives a fuck what you do it for or what joe shmoe does it for?

I could personally care less if I deadlift a zillion pounds or 5lbs but obviously one goes hand in hand with the other?

many people. for example, when new people come to the forum everyone immediatly says to get to 260 pounds of pure muscle. Not everyone wants that type of body.

edit: and I have found most girls do like a little stronger than the brad pitt type. So thats what I aim for because I know that is what people think looks good.

    different goals for different people

looking good is a positive side-effect of lifting... i lift to look good for myself, the second i start trying to look good for other people, i'll prob. want to kill myself

I'm not even sure what exercises would be the most efficient at "looking good". I hear the most about mass or strength but not aesthetics.

a million crunches and arm exercises?

You can PL and "look good" too provided you're not in the upper weight classes but thats not really the issue.

Most people who lift for looks lift like pussies and therefore never end up looking that great, at least in my experience. If your ultimate goal is to "look good for the beach" are you really going to push yourself to your limits no matter how much it hurts? I'm not saying I do but I damn sure train harder than a lot of people. Nothing wrong with wanting to look good because deep down inside I think everyone does whether they'll admit it or not.

The only time I see people get lambasted here for "aesthetics" is when someone discusses those who only do curls and benching.

I'm old enough that I don't need to have 5% bodyfat...as long as I don't end up looking like a fat slob I'll keep on lifting just to improve my strength.
