so i decided to start researching scopes last night for a remington 700 that i'll (eventually) get in the future.

im looking their long range tacticle scopes, particularly the MKIV M1 series.

    it has the following:
1st Focal Plane Tactical Milling Reticle
    40mm objective
    3.5-10x
m1 target knobs (1/4 MOA clicks)
    free flip open covers :dunno:
    $1,224.95 at www.swfa.com :o

is there anything else i should be looking for, in terms of what it offers? any suggestions from OTers with high powered precision rifles? the price is steep, but if its quality i dont mind.

p.s. i basically have no knowledge of what types of scopes are good/bad or if i want fixed power vs. variable. :dunno:

I can't see spending more on a scope than on the gun it's goin on. :dunno:

Why not just buy a VX-III 3.5-10 and then buy the turrets from leupold?

You can have target knobs put on just about any Leupold scope for around $120 or so, if I were you I'd just buy a VX3 in whatever power I want, then send it in to Leupold for the M1 knobs, hell of a lot cheaper.

Plus if you've got target knobs you don't really need a mildot reticle, just figure out the ballistics of the load you're using and you'll be fine.

ive got a Mark IV in 4.5-14x and i opted just for the duplex reticle to save money...i figured if all im doing is shooting a stationary target at preset range distances at the outdoor ranges, wtf do i need a 200 dollar mildot option for....thats for ranging on the fly and engaging moving targets. Got the scope for 960+tax and it has a very good home on my FN SPR. Im very happy with the entire rig.

If you want good glass, you're going to spend at LEAST as much as the gun cost, 2-4x more. Leupolds are the standard, so...that's what they cost. :dunno:

The Mk4 is a good, popular scope. SWFA has great service, but their prices are usually higher end.

    from their site:
    VX III 3.5-10X 40mm Matte (Duplex) LEU55046 $469

that could be what im looking for :dunno: then do what you all suggested (sending it back to leupold for M1 target knobs).

That's just my personal opinion. :dunno:

I bought a 10FP, I'll probably end up putting a Mueller scope on it. :o
