Trying to decide on something for my AK. For some reason I just really don't like my iron sights on it. The front sight is canted and right now I have it zeroed in nicely, but it's pushed as far to the right as it will go which makes it a little difficult to use but I don't like the sight picture anyway. So I'm looking to put some sort of budget optic on it mainly for plinking. I wanted to look into aimpoint clones and there was someone selling them on arfcom but I can't find them anymore. :hs: Another good option would be some sort of holograph (eotech-style) optic... What are some good clones that have a good reputation?

What about plain old red-dot vs holographic? Which would you prefer and why? :wavey:

I have a fakepoint from l337tactical. It has seen about 500 rounds and kept
its zero until the screws in the mount backed out....nothing some loctite can't
    fix.

At some point I'll probably replace it with a real aimpoint and American Defense
mount but so far the fakepoint has been worth the money.

    reference for fakepoint-ness

i can vouche for the fakepoint from l33t. Lame name, but the optic did what I needed it to. havent changed the battery yet, its no 50,000 hour aimpoint, but its doing OK. I ended up taking it off of my gun because i use it for home defense now so I just have a white light on it.

This is probably a stupid question, but I have a fake aimpont that came with the AR I bought...I'm not 100% sure how it works, so I'm using iron sights right now, but how do you get the dot to stay centered? I center the dot, but when I move my head, the dot's position moves, so it doesn't really do me any good.
Or else I'm an idiot and im missing something. Which is entirely possible.

NO, not an idiot. Your sight just has a parallax, http://www.6mmbr.com/parallax.html , which you can read about. The AIMPOINTS and even this clone is parallax free after like 15 feet. meaning the dot sticks to the target, and doesn't move with you head. With a optic with a parallax, you have to have a more consistent cheek weld to keep everything lined up properly.

Whew, thanks for the info :)
I couldn't figure out how that made sense.
I'll be picking up a better fakey in the near future, I don't like that setup at all. It's hard to know whethere you're going to be on target or not.

My EOTech 512 showed up at my doorstep two days ago, but CMMG used their last 16" M4 barrel on the gun built before mine. :wtc:

I've been handholding it and aiming at things on my TV. :hsd:

Seems to be an awesome sight though, can't wait to put it on a rifle, zero it in, and go shootin!

I'm starting to back out on the red dot now and am leaning towards an eotech. Are there any ones more affordable than the 512? I saw a similar reflex sight at CTD for like $130. :dunno:

I think the deciding factor here is going to be how big my refund is. :o

Bushnell HoloSight might work for you if you don't need something as rugged as the EoTech

I assume yours is a Bargain Bin one too? Mine is at the top of the to-be-built list. They said they expect the barrels sometime next week. I hope to have it by this weekend. :hsd:

Cheapest I can find. The 511 and 512 are the exact same model, but the 512 uses AA batteries, the 511 uses N. Harder to find and more expensive, but the 512 is longer than the 511.
