My wife got rewarded for her hard work this year and she graciously (more like... miraculously) OK'ed the purchase of a new camera body.

I've been using the Canon Rebel series (300d, 350d, 400d) ever since I picked up this expensive hobby, but always wanted to make the jump to the Canon xxd series. I own decent glass (a few Tammies and a few Canon primes), a bunch of speedlights, and some strobist lighting gear. Next on my wishlist are the new PWs, a set of ABs, and the 70-200 2.8 IS L.

So, should I do my part in keeping America debt ridden and enjoy the upgrade to the better body (most probably 50d), or should I be a good boy and use the money to pay our overwhelming debts.

Here's one of my kittah pics to add fuel to the fire.

Coming from a person thats gone through that dilemma, I'm going to tell you less debt is a lot more satisfying than a new camera.

Depends on how advanced you are. If your camera is stopping you from getting what you want and you KNOW exactly why you need a new one then yeah. But otherwise I'd say pay your debt, learn more about your camera, keep shooting and get one in a few months.

I wouldn't say my current body is stopping my from taking decent pictures. I'll admit that my XTi does a decent job. But, there are features on the 50d that would be nice to have... rear dial, better AF, bigger buffer, better build, better ergonomics, extended ISO, af adjustment, etc.

We're about to go through a lot of inflation. Your debts will be worth less in the future. Just something to think about.

If it isn't full frame, it's FAIL!

Stick with what you have. You won't notice any difference in your pictures with a 50D, only a bigger bill in the mail each month.

i just made the jump from the 350d, to the 50d... i'm happy with the upgrade, though the rear dial isn't necessary. And speaking from experience, [being a better photographer>having a better camera] My shots are no better than they were before. On the flip side... any limitations i might reach due to camera are much farther away than they were.

I got burned last time I bought a used body so I'd rather keep what I have. I guess I'll keep the XTi around until Mastercard/Visa don't own me anymore.
