In a classic case of putting your money where your mouth is, new UFC signee Brock Lesnar – who has made no bones about wanting to fight the best the heavyweight division has to offer – will make his Octagon debut at UFC 81 on February 2nd against none other than former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir.

The bout will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on the eve of Super Bowl XLII.

“It’s an interesting matchup,” said UFC President Dana White. “Lesnar is a great wrestler, a good athlete, and this is definitely gonna be a big test for him. Frank Mir is a former world champion who is coming off a big win over Antoni Hardonk, and he’s looking to get his career back on track while Lesnar’s looking to walk into the UFC and prove what type of fighter he’s gonna be by trying to knock him off.”

The 6-3 ½, 265 Lesnar (1-0) comes to the UFC with stellar college wrestling credentials
that saw him earn All American status four times, win Big Ten Championships twice, and also win the 2000 NCAA National Championship. After leaving the University of Minnesota, the South Dakota-born Lesnar gained fame as a professional wrestler and also had a stint with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. In 2007, he made his mixed martial arts debut and annihilated Min Soo Kim in just 69 seconds on June 2nd.

“This guy’s not trying to duck anybody,” said White of Lesnar. “He knew once he got in the UFC that he was gonna fight tough guys.”

28 year old Las Vegan Frank Mir (10-3) was destined for stardom from the moment he stepped in the UFC Octagon, and he lived up to all expectations when he submitted Tim Sylvia in 50 seconds in 2004 to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship. Unfortunately, Mir’s career ground to a halt when a serious motorcycle accident later that year forced him to the sidelines for almost two years. His eagnerness to return forced him into some spotty performances when he did return in 2006, but at UFC 74 in August, Mir was back in top notch form as he submitted Antoni Hardonk in just 77 seconds.

We have a few guys at my school who are ~265, but they don't look nearly as thick or as strong as he is. I can't imagine trying to fight a guy that size. :eek3:

Frank Mir will submit Lesnar back to the WWE. He stands no chance against a legit HW, he should have fought a can or two before taking on a former champ.

Id imagine it would be a decent cut for him to get down to 265 Im about his height and I reckon from what Ive seen of him he would be close to 300lbs most of the time.

The nice part about this matchup, is that we'll know the second that mir weighs in, whether it will be competitive.

It seemed like Mir has been getting his shit back on track. This is a bigger test than I thought they would give him. Mir can submit Brock outta nowhere :noes:

I think it is a very interesting match up based on two factors:

what kind of shape Mir shows up in and how good Lesnar's striking has gotten

aaaaaaaaaah.... I don't know who to root for. I was anxious to see Brock Lesnar fight and destroy, but not frank mir, and then again, can he even do that to Frank Mir? fuck.

Just like Hughes vs Newton...slam and triangle knockout at the same time :eek3:

  23. Win Antoni Hardonk Submission (Kimura) UFC 74 - Respect 8/25/2007 1 1:17
Loss Brandon Vera TKO (Strikes) UFC 65 - Bad Intentions 11/18/2006 1 1:09
Win Dan Christison Decision (Unanimous) UFC 61 - Bitter Rivals 7/8/2006 3 5:00
Loss Marcio Cruz TKO (Strikes) UFC 57 - Liddell vs Couture 3 2/4/2006 1 4:10

All the man's fights since beating Sylvia in 2004. That is "looking real good?"

vs. The reality of Gonzaga's performance over the same time period:

    Loss Randy Couture TKO (Strikes) UFC 74 - Respect 8/25/2007 3 1:37
Win Mirko Filipovic KO (Head Kick) UFC 70 - Nations Collide 4/21/2007 1 4:51
Win Carmelo Marrero Submission (Armbar) UFC 66 - Liddell vs Ortiz II 12/30/2006 1 3:22
Win Fabiano Scherner TKO (Strikes) UFC 60 - Hughes vs. Gracie 5/27/2006 2 0:24
Win Kevin Jordan KO (Punch) UFC 56 - Full Force 11/19/2005 3 4:39

If you're going to discount fights where they look absolutely horrible, you're going to toss out Gonzaga's Win over Kevin Jordan and Mir's win over Imes, and what does that leave Mir? Nothing except his last fight, an impressive win. You're shitting on one fighter for his last fight being a loss, while letting another one's most recent victory overshadow years of shitty performance.

Isn't your sherdog thread a different thread than this one?

Pretty damn interesting matchup. You'd have to say Mir is favourite here to sub Lesnar.

Both of them are strongest on the ground, so I bet they will both try to see who has the advantage in the standup and try to win it there. Lesnar should be able to take Mir down but I think could get himself caught in a sub. Mir meanwhile I picture using the unfamiliar cage to bring Lesnar down and go for the sub.

Meanwhile, if Lesnar ends up in Mir's guard, I'm wondering how good his ground and pound will be and how good Mir will be off his back with Lesnar on top.

Hard to call but Mir definitely gets favouritism.

    Intriguing! +D
