I got accepted by the Texas department of Criminal Justice for a Correctional Officer I Position.

They told me to report to the academy on November 19th and that a condition of employment is "direct contact with OC and CS chemicals" So yea, I get that part, I'm going to be maced prior to being given a job. :wtc:

I also must "Qualify with the .357 handgun, Ar-15 Rifle and 870P shotgun"

Other than that it doesn't say shit other than the academy is 5 1/2 to 6 weeks long.

Anyone here care to clue me in to what is in store for me?

    Thanx.

PS sorry mods Couldnt figure out where else to post this.

Don't mean to sound like a dick, but what is the motivation to be a corrections officer?

They just build a federal prison about 30 min from my house so I know a lot of guys that got jobs there as CO's. They fucking love their jobs and get paid awesome money (for around here). Said that they bust their ass with overtime and some of those fuckers are pretty loaded for HS graduates. A lot of them have pill habits though (oxys and stuff) so I think thats where a lot of the money goes. And honestly most of them that I know truly are dick heads.

Thats kind of what I thought. I suppose it is a good way to get used to handling thugs... learn while in they're in a cage before you have deal with them in the wild.

You should have encouraged her to shoot out the windows so you guys would have cool speed holes. It'd make code 3 traffic so much more fun.

    Pussy :mamoru:

I got hosed with the shit when I did it; ear to ear, forehead to neck. My instructor was a real prick :o

I was over it and back to normal within about 40 minutes, although it still burned a little every time it got reactivated for the next 2 1/2 days.

i've been working in the Comal County Jail(New Braunfels,Tx) for a little over 3 years. part of your training is to get your jailer's license. that part is usually 2-3 weeks long depending on who's giving it. then you have to pass the TCLEOSE state test for your license. the rest of your academy is gonna be agency procedures, tactics(fighting) and probably some physical fitness stuff. you'll also most likely get some material on gangs(tattoos, history...etc). if you have a brain stem and pay attention, the academic shit is piss easy. i don't know how TDCJ is for their training program, but most places after you graduate from the academy, they'll put you in ojt, where you have a trainer w/you all the time for a while(ours is 8weeks). if you do okay on that, you'll be on a probationary period for usually a year, then you'll be good to go. when you're working w/inmates, you'll be called every name in the book, so if you have thin skin, you won't make it. listen to what all your instructors/trainers are telling you. they're telling you for a reason, and even if you don't understand it, it could save your life.

did you have to do anything physical after you got sprayed? So during the 40 minute period you would consider the pain, not that bad?

Not as much as I thought we would have to...had to call out our location, and deliver a few knee strikes and punches to a bag.

Would I want to do it again? Fuck no. But it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be going in.

The other thing about OC is it affects everyone differently. I have a somewhat darker complexion, so that probably helped. Then again, in the last group of recruits that got sprayed, there was a black guy who got sprayed and was fucking DONE. The guy couldn't do shit; the OC really affected him.

Fighting with 2 people for 2 minutes who are trying to take your weapon from you is a bit difference than some knee strikes. But like you said eveyone is different. I just didnt meet anyone that said it wasnt that bad, at least from my class.

    Ding Ding Ding

I got shot down for the Police Academy because I didn't have enough experience. Competing with former leo's, military etc. They told me to get a job as a dispatcher, CO, etc to help boost my resume.

In my training class we had 4 males and 1 female. The only one to quit (so far) was the ex-marine who got fired up every time an inmate would call him names. The sad part is that the female was a stay at home mother before this, and she has lasted longer than him. She's not a pushover, but still :mamoru:

And if you have ever taken care of kids, a LOT of those skills will transfer to your job as a CO......most of these guys are just whiners and spend all day trying to think up new ways to make your life difficult. It's like dealing with 200 pound 6 year olds.
