LAKE ARTHUR, N.M. (AP) - A Lake Arthur police officer has resigned after he was accused of firing his department-issued Taser at his stepson.

Lake Arthur Police Chief Will Norwood says Ben Torrez was given the opportunity to resign or be fired, and he opted to resign August Tenth.

Chaves County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Rob Coon says Torrez was charged Aug. 3 with two counts of aggravated battery.

Sheriff’s officials say 18-year-old Derek Duarte was shot with a Taser July 28th at his home during an argument with his girlfriend and stepfather.

Torrez was off duty at the time.

Not much detail on the incident he may not of been in the wrong, maybe the kid was smacking his girlfriend around when the stepfather tasered him.

I'm still undecided on tasers, I don't really see why they're better than OC.

With OC the effects are lingering, wind, rain and shit can throw the stream off. With the taser once the juice stops they're fairly ok dont have to wash there eyes out or clean the snot out of the back of the police car.

Hmm, thats strange...the story didn't say what the stepson did to earn the tasering.

They didn't even say how old he was. There's a differance between some punk high school kid and a 10 year old who just got in daddy's way after he'd had a few beers.

It does say he's 18, also doesn't mention any sort of charges against the father, if no charges were filed then it had to be justified.

Because it works on everyone, including people that are crazy, high, drunk, etc. People can easily fight through OC, it's likely to just piss them off. You can't do diddly when being shocked. And like previously stated, once it's done it's done. And if you've ever been sprayed you know you don't want to get that shit on you. The ofc always gets it too. They both have their places, but the taser is a very useful & needed tool.
