I picked up a used 30D body and need a good all around lens that will help me through the learning process, and will still be useful later when I'm competent with digital photography. I'm on a budget of up to $300, but the cheaper the better. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

not a canon guy, but i do know there is a 50mm prime you might find useful for around 100.00. if its anything like the nikkon 50 prime, then it hopefully should provide you with better optics over the kit lens, not to mention a wide open aperture

the 50 1.8 is a good lens although i'm not sure if you want a prime or a zoom lens

the quality zoom lenses get quite expensive

a used tamron 17-50 2.8 shouldn't run you that much, try for that?

that would be my suggestion if you are limited to just 1 lens at that budget.

I have a 30d and a 50/1.4. do not get a 50mm as your only lens on a 30d (or any crop body).

definitely get a zoom lens. tamron 17-35 or 17-50 is gonna be your best bet.. or you could get a canon 28-135 or tamron 28-75 and pick up a kit lens (cheap canon 17-55 or 18-55 whatever) to have a wide angle.

I really like my 28-135 IS. Not a super lens, but the IS is very nice. I wish it were wider, but oh well.

    18-55mm IS or 50mm 1.8?

both are around $100, the 18-55 used and the 50 new. 99% of the time, the subjects of teh pictures will be within 20ft. a friend suggested the 50mm 1.8 will be fine with that. your thoughts on this?

The 50 really limits how you shoot - it is quite long on a 1.6x crop. I don't use mine that much.

I can't stress enough not to get a 50mm as your only lens on a 30d
