I'm set to ship out on the 24th for Basic Training at Ft Benning. Can anybody who has been through there give me any tips on what to expect / bring / not bring / etc? I have lots of questions but I figure I'll see if anybody can answer them before I start a long, naive post.

    Thanks

take your xbox and at least 4 controllers.

    I kid I kid :fawk:
I'm assuming this is Army stuff, so I can't really tell you much except for the common sense stuff. Take your body and bring along your common sense, do as you're told and do it fast. You should be good.

Yeah, figured Basic at Ft Benning is like 99% Army Infantry it was assumed, but that's what I'm doing.

A buddy of mine is about 2 months into training there right now and he called me last night to tell me some stuff. He sounded really messed up, I think they broke him. :wtc:

    1. It's will be hot.
    2. They will yell at you.
    3. You will feel like an idiot for the first couple of weeks.
    4. They will cuss at you and call you bad names.
    5. Pushups.
    6. They will make you do stupid things and laugh at you.
    7. Grenades, M16's, and ruckmarches
    8. Grits.
    9. Sleepy.
    10. Lots and lots of cleaning.

Remember the following things and you will do fine.

    1. Never volunteer.
    2. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.
    3. Open your ears and eyes, not your mouth.
    4. Do it they way they want not the way you think is best.
    5. Do your best.

I hear that they rip through your shit searching for contraband (Which I'm told is everywhere at Basic) when you get there. Is this true?

I have no idea how long I'll be at reception, but I am allowed to bring things to keep myself from getting bored right? (Books, stationary, etc.)

Aside from the whole length of time there, the thing that is really bothering me is that I won't be able to work out the entire time. I mean, I know that the whole thing is alot of pushups, running, and all that, but I won't be able to lift. I'm gonna lose like 30 lbs. It's kinda funny. Most people go to basic and get into shape, I'm gonna get worse. :mamoru:

do sound off when everyone does for your platoon or company motto and at other appropiate times. not yelling = lack of motivation and they will fuck with you.

A guy I work with told me this too, and I'm not sure why. What do they do? Ask for volunteers but not tell you what you're volunteering for?

Why are you worrying about contraband? Bring what they tell you and nothing else.

Big muscles does not mean you are in good shape. A well rounded person is has muscular strength and endurance along with great cardio endurance. You may think you are in good shape now, but lets see how you feel after a week or so in basic.

Most people look at volunteers as ass-kissers, and yes they do ask for volunteers without telling you what you are volunteering for.

I know it won't be easy. I run alot, but it is not nearly what they will have me doing. What I'm saying is just that the body that I have worked on for the past few years is not the body the military wants me to have. Because of this I will go from more of a weight training type body to more of a sort of track/feild physique. I've been likening it to sort of a much more intense wrestling season (Wrestling kills your muscle mass) :wtc: Hopefully muscle memory will hold true when I return.

it wont be too hard. since you are in shape already and in basic you will do a lot of cardio your body will adjust pretty quick. its just all the shitbags that come in overweight or very skinny and weak that have the hardest time. you will do fine dont worry :bigthumb:

i thought breakfast was awesome at Benning. by far, the BEST meal of the day. EAT FAST!!!!! EAT IT NOW, TASTE IT LATER!!!

i dont even remember how many times we got kicked outa the chow hall just after a few minutes of sitting down. I still wolf down my food to this day, even tho i have ample time to eat. All thanks to Basic.

Talked to my buddy at Basic again today, he was on some kids cell and sounded a lot more human than he did before. Said he was in Red Phase (Whatever that means) and that he now gets sundays off. Basically he just told me to bear through the hell that is the first few weeks because it gets alot easier. He also mentioned something about the 12th week (Can't remember what it is called), and made it sound very Crucible-like. Can anybody explain this?

I have one more day of freedom. I'm gonna get my shit together, have one last big party with my buddies (Most are off to college.) No alcohol for me :wtc:. Bang this chick I've been getting all weepy over me leaving, and watch Starship Troopers.

    Any last words of wisdom?
