I've got a broad windows end-user background in retail support and business to business networking sales. I might be going into a junior engineer position and my contact suggested I see what I can learn about Solaris and Unix. Anyone have any book suggestions? :)

engineering as in developing/creating something under the solaris platform or engineering as supporting something on the solaris platform.

    either way start with docs.sun.com

you can start with opensolaris on a x86 machine or vm.

It'd be a junior engineer. They would expect me to be a guy that "knows a bit about computers" and nothing about what they expect me to work on, for the most part. As far as I know, there's no software development. It's a contract for a large project deployment.

I just wanted to do a little homework so I felt comfortable. The person who recommended me for the position said that I might want to learn a bit about those. Thanks for the tips!!

Solaris is very easy to understand once you get the fundamentals down. I think I've seen a for dummies book before when I was walking around borders

Don't waste your time on CentOS; it's way different than OpenSolaris or BSD Unix.
