I'm working on something that's pretty complicated (to me), parsing millions of poker hand history files and storing all actions by players in a database for quick look up of stats. Nothing that hasn't been done before, but I need to do it in my own way. So where could I start to learn about optimal database schemas and stuff?

Not just SQL or some particular DBMS, but best practices considering what needs to be looked up etc. The organization of my databases is what messes me up, I don't need to spend my time learning about the basic SQL statements methinks . . .

Also what DBMS would be good for this? I've always used MySQL but other products like this are using PostgreSQL.

    Thanks :)
