I've always heard that behind the neck is bad for your back, but I was trying a new routine and went with behind the neck like they suggested and I actually feel like it hits my back better. So, what's the consensus - good or bad for the back? How differently is it hitting the muscles to do one vs. the other?

(searched and didn't find anything. sorry if this is answered somewhere already.)

    it hits different muscles...

whenever I go behind the back I use much lighter weight and focus on really squeezing the muscles....

some people, like Patty Bates, don't have the shoulder mobility to do it so if it hurts don't force it...

I don't lift very heavy anyway. The workout actually has wide grip behind the neck and then a close grip in front later. It was the first time I'd ever actually tried behind. I liked the way it felt - seemed like I was getting more out of it.

light/heavy is relative....so light for you compared to what you can do to the front...

if it feels good keep doing it...

if i sit up straight, it hits me there too, but if lean forward just slightly, it works pretty well.

why the fuck would you do that? Behind the back pulldowns are about squeezing not making your gaping hatchet wound bigger!

behind the neck I limit my range of motion to a 90 degree elbow bend rather than pulling in all the way to the spine PBates style

It's not bad for your back. It's bad for the shoulders of some people. I never do behind the neck because I am one of the people whose shoulders can't take it. And I wouldn't say that either is correct, only that each has advantages and disadvantages. Behind the neck works the lats more compared to the biceps and forearms.
