So I have a HP laptop that will power on, all the blue lights on the system will light up, the fan kicks on but the screen will not illuminate. I took it into Circuit City where I got it and they could not do anything with it. I did an online chat with HP tech support and they stated that because it is out of warranty there is nothing that they could do other than have me send it into them to look at. They want $100 just to look at it. Is there anything that I can do on my own to see what is wrong or perhaps fix? They estimated that its going to cost $800 to fix if it needs a new mobo or screen. Motherfucking HP.

    Ideas, thoughts or suggestions?

    do you see the bios?

    windows start screen?

is the screen on, like do you see a faint back light?

if you boot off a cd, do you see anything?

if this is a hardware issue like vid card or lcd, you're gonna be pretty screwed.

for 800 you can buy another lappy with an external lappy hd case.

If you get lucky and it's the inverter, you could fix it for ~75 bucks. If it's the LCD, minus whale get a new one unfortunately.

But you're hearing the fan and everything?

Hook it up to an external monitor. If you get screen, it's likely the LCD on the laptop.

Yes fan and everything. We did hook it up to a external monitor and it would not show anything their either. I wish I could get the fucker torn apart, I tried I removed all the screws and everything but could not gain access to the guts.

Being that it will not show up on an external monitor does that somewhat eliminate the possibility that it is the LCD?

Dd you plug in the monitor and then turn the laptop on? Or just plug in the monitor?

I'm not familiar with laptops, so a question for everybody.
How hard is it to find a walkthrough on opening his laptop?

Because once he's in there, he could do some basic troubleshooting at least.

usually when you plug in an external monitor, you need to hit a key combination to activate it, i think its like ctrlf7 or something

If the laptop is turned off when you plug in the monitor you shouldn't have to do anything.

The usual approach to opening a laptop is to pry up the plastic bit between the top of the keyboard and the bottom of the screen (which may or may not include the plastic covering the screen hinges), then to unscrew the keyboard and lift it out of the way. Optionally, you can also unscrew and pry up the wristpad, but there's rarely anything motherboard-related under there.

how old is this laptop? you might think about parting it out instead of attempting to fix it and end up possibly breaking it more or never fixing it

    www.repair4laptop.com

It's got the full disassembly instructions for my Presario 700, so it should have something for yours.

The problem's deeper than the LCD. Sounds like whatever graphics card or chip you had in there just went south (wild guess). Either that, or you had it in Hibernation and it just won't come out of the self-induced coma (less likely answer).
