Im trying to reformat my friends laptop and I am having no luck. I can boot to the CD and everything, but when I try to Format the HD, it gets to about 25% done and it just shuts itself off. The battery is connected, and charged but still it shuts itself down. Anyone have any insight?

Use Quick NTFS format instead and hopefully you'll get past the problem.

run seagate SeaTools on the drive to make sure it's not defective.

the notebook could also be overheating.

Check the memory using something like MemTest86 and if that pans out I'd check the hard drive with DFT.

It is possible that it is overheating as well though. Was it having problems with shutting down on it's own before?
