OK I have a Toshiba Satellite w/ p4 3.3 gig 512 ram (about 3 years old) I have had to send it back 4 times (tomorrow being the 4th) for it overheating and the fans kept going out, now my DVD burner has gone out for the 2nd time and I need to format it but cant because of the burner being out. I really like Toshiba but this has kinda put a bad taste in my mouth for em. I dont know anybody else that has had problems with Toshiba. My wife has one and loves it and has no trouble.

I think once I get it fixed Im going to sell it --- I need a good laptop between $1500/ $1750. Dont really want Vista. 15.4 screen, at least a gig of ram, dvd burner, memory card reader is optional. I want a good screen being I watch alot of movies on it while at work.

So how bout it --- got any suggestions. :x:

The t61 is one of the MOST DURABLE notebooks on the planet. Short of getting a Panasonic ToughBook, the Thinkpad is the way to go.

    You can get a 15.4" T61.

Toughbooks are sweet, but you generally trade slower specs for the durability

Im not fond of the tough book. I dont like the keypad for sure and the screen sucks. But I understand its gotta be like that to make it bulletproof.

Im going to look into the ThinkPad ---- and I would never buy a Laptop without the accidental damage plan.

I have the Lenovo T61P that cost me 1200. Core2Duo, 512mb Video Card, 15.4 inch wide screen, dvd burner, and windows XP.

    I love it.

As far as accidental damage... look into a company called Safeware. When I used to own a Powerbook, I dropped it down a flight of stairs and I got a brand new laptop shipped to me. Cost was 65 bucks for me or something like that, but I'm a student. Check into it.

If you're a student, check with your IT department. Many colleges/unis have deals with the MFGs so you can get much better prices. As far as brands go, I got a Dell Inspirion E1705 (the 15.4" screen version was E1505) about 1.5 years ago. I got a 3 year, in-home warranty covering accidental drops, spills and failures for like $50.

I paid about $1700 for a $2200 retail computer and it's be simply awesome.

Don't listen to all the Dell hate that will come from this post....this forum makes dell sound like pieces of shit comps but they aren't. Don't believe the hate.

You'll never convince him...he's written them off long ago and simply won't change his mind. Too bad for him.

when a good dell comes out, you let me know and I'll try it out.

and for the record, I've tried their current offerings and they're as shitty as ever.

have you not read any of this forum?

Given two machines of comprable specs (one dell, one something else -- hp/gateway/lenovo/asus) the dell machine will UNDERperform compared to the other.

    Dell hinges are notoriously bad

Dell keyboards are notoriously prone to failure

Dell gives you a thin slab of plastic and calls it a chassis. It doesn't protect the machine from any physical force or from EMF.

Dell batteries blow bfdd. I have dells that can't hold a charge past a year, yet my 4 year old ASUS still gets 1.5 hours of life between charges.

    My dell > your dells
:werd: But I don't torque on mine. Some people are hard on their computers. Others treat them like the precision machines they are.
    what?

    50lb laptop FTL
my battery still easily give 2 hours life after 1.5 years of service.

Yea, cause like coottie said, I really want to lug around a 10 pound laptop.
So, I have had a compaq for the last 2 year, the battery life is now down to a half hour, if that, so I am to assume that all HP/Compaq batteries suck? They are rechargeable batteries, they go bad after awhile. I seriously think you are just grasping, just because you "hate" because you know, zOMG IT'S A DELLL!!!!!!!!!11onety
