my laptop randomly started running very hot a few weeks ago... the fan's constantly alternate between max and medium speeds.

it's only a little over a year old, and i'm looking for opinions. obviously it could be that a fan failed or something like that... i'm going to open it up once i get my hands on a screw driver small enough. but are there any other more common causes?

this is after 15 minutes of a fan blowing under the laptop and i'm literally doing nothing but browsing OT.

are your fans clear? its amazing how much dust can build up on them, and they don't work if the flow is blocked.

Must have some dust in it. Laptops run warm anyway but for it to be that hot it must not be breathing to well.

yeah, my vote goes here. sometimes you can get lucky and spray some compressed air to blow it out, but other times you have to physically see the heat sink to get all the dust off. some boards have shitty designs and if you don't have direct access to the heat sink/fan the dust you blow just builds up along some other hardware in the laptop/board.

99.999999999% of the time people tell me they browse with their laptop on their bed or on the carpet floor.
